Histoire originale de Takashi Nishikawa, le réalisateur principal du studio d'animation Seven.
En fin de l'ère Heian (794-1185), l'humanité coexiste encore aux côtés des monstres. Shaga est l'une d'entre eux et vit en ermite depuis le début de l'ère. Par un concours de circonstances, elle fait la rencontre d'Ushiwaka, un jeune Genji devant accéder à la consécration bouddhiste. Il doit pour cela rejoindre l'Occident. Shaga s'exécute et soutient son nouveau protégé, dans une quête remplie de sens du devoir, de tristesse, et surtout d'amour.
