L'histoire prend place après une guerre abominable, qui fit découvrir à cette contrée un terrible pouvoir, le "contrat du diable". Cecily Campbell, fille d'un aristocrate, poursuit la tradition de sa famille en devenant un Chevalier. Mais, lors d'un combat contre un ancien chevalier devenu fou, son épée se brise, elle est alors sauvé par Luke Ainsworth, un mystérieux forgeron, qui possède en réalité le pouvoir du contrat du diable, un pouvoir qui est devenu tabou en cette période de paix. Cecily se rendra bientôt compte que ce mystérieux jeune guerrier s'avère être le forgeron qu'elle recherche, celui capable de restaurer son épée.
