母は「3年B組金八先生」の脚本家、小山内美江子。高校時代から自主映画を制作し、笹平剛名義の監督作「教訓I」（80）がぴあフィルムフェスティバルで上映される。81年、小山内が脚本を担当したTVドラマ「父母の誤算」で主演を務め、俳優としてデビュー。岡本喜八監督の「近頃なぜかチャールストン」（81）では主演だけでなく、共同脚本と助監督も務めた。以降、伊丹十三監督の「お葬式」（84）や、岡本監督の「ジャズ大名」（86）などに出演。自ら脚本を書いた「ザジ ZAZIE」（89）で映画監督デビューを果たし、「BeRLiN」（95）で日本映画監督協会新人賞を受賞、「クロエ」（01）はベルリン国際映画祭のコンペティション部門に出品された。その後も、俳優・映画監督として活動を続ける。
